Rail Head Construction - Dounreay
Dounreay has a strategic requirement to move material to Sellafield. Rail has been identified as the preferred method of transport. Work was needed to understand the detailed transport options and put in place fit for purpose facilities to meet demanding programme timescales.
The DRS Solution
DRS’s consultancy team undertook a feasibility study to assess a number of siting options from which a preferred site was selected for a new railhead.
In Phase 2, the project team applied DRS’s extensive nuclear transport expertise to design a new railhead and deliver a range of pre-sanction activities.
At the end of 2011 Dounreay contracted DRS to construct the railhead facilities ready for operation in Summer 2012. The new railhead will encompass fixed gantry cranes, a platform, necessary track modifications and workforce facilities.
The Key Benefit
- A flexible design, meeting the needs of Dounreay, while supporting the local economy with improved rail freight handling capabilities.
